EMA Regime Filter for 15-Minute Index Trading
Use a four-EMA lattice and tape state to filter SPX 15m entries for credit spreads and directional index trades — with bar-close discipline.
Fifteen-minute index charts sit between noise and slow conviction. Credit-spread sellers use them to time vertical entries; directional traders use them to confirm higher-timeframe bias. A useful EMA regime filter does not dump more crosses on the chart — it compresses four spans (short through long) into tape state: bullish alignment, neutral chop, or bearish alignment, then gates entries accordingly.
Why four EMAs instead of one
Single moving-average crosses lag and whipsaw on SPX 15m. A lattice of four EMAs (for example 27 / 68 / 144 / 309 on OrisTrade EMA Regime Pro) shows whether short, medium, and long spans agree. When spans stack bullish with price above the lattice, put-credit sellers have structural tailwind. When spans compress or invert, premium sold too aggressively gets run over by trend legs.
Tape state: CHOP vs STRONG
Regime filters should label chop explicitly. In CHOP, edge per trade drops — many spread sellers reduce size or skip. In STRONG tape, filtered entry tags (L+, L^, XL exits) carry more weight because momentum and structure align. Bar-close tags matter: acting on a forming 15m candle recreates the repaint problem regime filters are meant to solve.
Credit-spread mode on a regime indicator
- Bull-put bias when lattice and tape support long-bias structure.
- Bear-call consideration only when bear regime is confirmed — not on one red candle.
- Hedge cues in neutral when book load already leans one direction.
- Unified desk row summarizing BUY / STRONG BUY / EXIT / HEDGE for quick scanning.
Pair the filter with journaling
A regime tag is only useful if you log whether you obeyed it. Note the tape state at entry in your spread journal; review weekly whether violations correlate with losers. OrisTrade EMA Regime Pro supplies the chart frame; ALRE™ supplies the book-load frame on journal.oristrade.com.
